Teachings

Our resident teacher, Venerable Chökyi splits her time spending 4 weeks with us at Hayagriva followed by 2 weeks in Bunbury at Tara Meditation Centre. When in Perth, she teaches on Fridays (mornings from 10.30am to 12noon and on some evenings from 7pm to 8pm) and Sundays (11.30am to 1pm).

Friday Mornings 10.30am to 12noon

On Friday mornings, the subject of teachings is normally drawn from treatise (seminal writings) by ancient masters with a lineage that can be traced all the way back to Buddha Shakyamuni. These treatise require a reliable teacher such as Venerable Chökyi to help us understand their deeper meaning and put us on the true path of the Mahayana tradition. It is normal for teachings on a particular subject to run over several weeks. In this case, each session will take place on Friday at the same time each week. Check our online calendar of events and our website’s Hayagriva Buddhist Centre Home Page for more information.

Friday Evenings 7pm-8pm

On some Fridays, Venerable Chokyi will discuss important subjects in the world through the eyes of a Buddhist. Check our online calendar of events and our website’s Hayagriva Buddhist Centre Home Page for more information. This is an ideal time for anyone interested in Buddhism to attend as the subjects are more worldly and there is an opportunity to ask questions.

Sunday Mornings 11.30am-1pm

Hayagriva is affiliated with the FPMT, a Buddhist organisation with over 160 affiliated centres, monasteries, nunneries, retreat centres, and charitable projects around the world. The FPMT has created Discovering Buddhism, a structured curriculum aimed specifically at newcomers to Buddhism. Discovering Buddhism has 13 modules. Modules are self-contained and can be taken in any order. Each module is taught over several sessions (one per week) and ends with a “retreat”. The “retreat” is an intensive practical conclusion to the module and takes place over an entire day on a weekend (or over two days on a long weekend).

When in Perth, Venerable Chökyi teaches the Discovering Buddhism modules on Sundays (11.30am to 1pm). Discovering Buddhism can be taken as a formal program with accreditation. When you register for Discovering Buddhism you will receive the printed material. If you prefer, Discovering Buddhism is also available as an online course from the FPMT.

Check our online calendar of events and our website’s home page for more information about which module of Discovering Buddhism is being taught. If you wish to register for the module, please email us at welcome@hayagriva.org.au.

We have begun to record a video of each teaching and to make it available on the Hayagriva Buddhist Centre YouTube channel. Most teachings are can also be attended “live” online. Click here to view all of our online teachings and to obtain the details you need to join us on Zoom.
